Emotional Topex dedicates Phoenix comeback win to ‘son’ Abueva

Phoenix coach Topex Robinsons turns emotional as he talks about Calvin Abueva after Phoenix win.

MANILA, Philippines—Topex Robinson did it for his “son.”

Amid Calvin Abueva’s ongoing suspension, Phoenix gutted out a tough 91-84 comeback win over Magnolia in the PBA Philippine Cup and Robinson couldn’t help but let his emotions out while thinking of the beleaguered forward.

Robinson said that one of the reasons why the Fuel Masters couldn’t afford to give up is because of the promise they gave to Abueva, who has yet to play in the PBA despite completing the requirements from the Games and Amusements Board.

“One of the reasons not to give up, is when we leave the hotel we know that one of our sons is not with you,” said Robinson as tears welled up during his media availability Friday at Angeles University.

“We told Calvin to keep on playing, keep being positive. It’s really had for him because he wants to play but the best thing he could do is cheer for us and it’s hard for a coach knowing that one of your sons is not with you.”

Abueva is serving his suspension that started in June and has dragged on until the PBA resumed the 2020 season.

Despite his status, Abueva was allowed to join Phoenix in the bubble in Clark and was told to complete further requirements that GAB imposed.

The only thing left to complete for Abueva is for him to suit up and be included in the Fuel Masters’ game day lineup.

“We always do it for Calvin,” said Robinson who has known Abueva since they were in San Sebastian. “Calvin wants to help us and the best he could do is practice, cheer for us, pray for us.”

With Abueva on their minds against the Hotshots, the Fuel Masters turned white hot in the fourth quarter and outscored their opponents 31-13 to ultimately end their two-game skid and improve to 3-2.

“I love Calvin, everybody loves Calvin and we’re doing it for Calvin,” said Robinson.
