MANILA, Philippines — Philippine Superliga chairman Philip Ella Juico said turning professional is not among the priorities for the PSL at the moment.
Juico, though, cleared the PSL is not closing its doors on the possibility of going pro in the future despite majority of the team owners prefer the league to keep its semi-professional status.
“Perhaps [the PSL could turn pro]. It depends on the situation, it depends on so many things, although seven of our eight team owners recently said we should not go that path,” Juico said during the PSA Forum on Tuesday.
“We should stay where we are because a lot of the facts that are being used to apply to us are different facts when it comes to the PSL.”
Games and Amusements Board (GAB) chair Baham Mitra has urged semi-pro leagues to turn pro on the heels of the joint memorandum of the GAB and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) designating the likes of the PSL and the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) as professional tournaments.
The PSL is raring to return to action with its usual three-conference season beginning in February on top of a beach volleyball tournament being eyed also in the same month pending approval from the Inter-Agency Task Force.
The PSL Invitational Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup was originally scheduled on Nov. 28 to 30 in Subic before it was pushed back due to the string of weather disturbances in the country.
