Uichico to call shots for Gilas Pilipinas in Bahrain qualifiers

MANILA, Philippines—Jong Uichico, a veteran of several international duties, has been named the head coach of Gilas Pilipinas for the coming 2021 Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers in Bahrain.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Al Panlilio announced the development Thursday, a week before the start of the competition’s November window in Manama, Bahrain.

“It’s a welcome challenge, we’re trying the best we can in getting them ready for the international game,” said Uichico in a Zoom press conference. “It’s an adjustment for me because you need more teaching but not too complicated.”

“We hope that we can get that chemistry as soon as possible. We have a few more practices today, tomorrow, before we leave on Sunday.”

Uichico, the head of the SBP coaches academy, already handled the Philippine national team. His latest stint with Sinag Pilipinas led to the gold medal in the 2017 Souheast Asian Games in Malaysia.

He will handle a team comprised of players that haven’t had any exposure in the professional ranks.

Part of Uichico’s coaching staff are San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez and TNT deputy Alton Lister while Tab Baldwin will serve as the program director.
