MANILA, Philippines — University of Perpetual Help has tapped longtime assistant Mike Saguiguit as the new head coach of its men’s basketball team.

Anton Tamayo, the school board’s liaison officer in charge of the athletic program, made Saguiguit’s appointment official on Tuesday night.

The 46-year-old Saguiguit replaced Frankie Lim, who resigned last September after calling the shots for the Altas the past two seasons. Saguiguit had been serving as the team’s interim coach since Lim’s departure.

“Thanks to [the] Perpetualite community for trusting me to handle the senior’s basketball program of our dear Alma Mater, University of Perpetual Help, to sir Tony, boss Anton, sir Anthony and boss Richard.” said Saguiguit in a press release.

“I will do my best to uplift our University our color, maroon and gold to the next level of competence. Come and support our dear Alma Mater on this basketball season.”

Perpetual Help missed the final four last season after finishing in seventh place with a 5-13 record.

Apart from 6-7 sophomore Mario Barasi, Jr., Saguiguit said the Altas have retained their core o from last season headed by skipper Jielo Razon, Ben Adamos and Tonton Peralta.

Joph Cleofas, one of Saguitsuit’s assistants, has been tasked to handle the high school team.
