Remy Martin scored 23 of his 31 points in the second half, including the game-winning 3-pointer with nine seconds left, to give No. 23 Arizona State a 71-70 win over Grand Canyon at Phoenix on Sunday.
ASU (4-2) held on to win when Jovan Blacksher Jr.’s attempted 3-pointer over Holland Woods at the buzzer rolled around the rim and out.
Blacksher had made a 3-pointer to trim ASU’s lead to 68-67 with 1:12 left in regulation.
After Alonzo Verge missed a jumper on the other end, Alessandro Lever made another shot from beyond the arc to give Grand Canyon (4-1) a 70-68 lead with 30 seconds left. Following an ASU timeout, Martin hit his 3-pointer from the corner to put ASU back on top for good.
No. 3 Iowa 106, Northern Illinois 53
Luka Garza had 23 points and Joe Wieskamp scored 20 as the undefeated Hawkeyes took control early and rolled over the Huskies in Iowa City.
Patrick McCaffery scored 14 points and Keegan Murray added 10 for the Hawkeyes (6-0), who rank among the national leaders in scoring. They raised their average to 100.5 points per game following their highest-scoring game of the season. Garza scored 14 first-half points and went 8 of 10 from the field for the game and grabbed eight rebounds.
Wieskamp made 9 of 13 attempts from the field for the Hawkeyes, who shot 56.2 percent for the game. Adong Makuoi had 14 points to lead NIU (0-5), which was held to 34.3 percent shooting, including 2 of 15 attempts from 3-point range. The Huskies fell to 0-9 all-time against Iowa.
No. 4 Michigan State 109, Oakland 91
Gabe Brown had 20 points and the Spartans scored 65 second-half points to defeat the winless Golden Grizzlies at East Lansing.
Aaron Henry had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists for Michigan State (6-0), while Josh Langford contributed 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Spartans finished with seven players in double figures and owned a massive 52-20 edge on the boards.
Rashad Williams poured in 36 points, including eight 3-pointers, for Oakland (0-7). Jalen Moore had 26 points and five assists for the Grizzlies, an in-state opponent that fell to 0-19 all-time against the Spartans.
No. 11 West Virginia 87, No. 19 Richmond 71
Miles McBride finished with 20 points and five assists, and Derek Culver recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead host West Virginia over Richmond in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers (6-1) shot 58.1 percent (36 for 62) from the field and made 8 of 14 attempts from 3-point range. McBride scored 16 points in the first half.
The Spiders (4-1), with their highest ranking since 1957, had a hard time handling West Virginia’s size in the frontcourt as well as its full-court pressure. Richmond committed 16 turnovers — 12 in the first half.
No. 22 Ohio State 67, Cleveland State 61
Duane Washington had 17 points and CJ Walker 16 for the host Buckeyes in the victory over Cleveland State in Columbus.
Zed Key added 12 points for the Buckeyes (5-0), and D’Moi Hodge led the Vikings (0-3) with 14 points.
Ohio State led 63-56 with 33 seconds left when Washington made a free throw, then added two more 10 seconds later for a 65-56 lead. After a Hodge basket, Washington hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining for a 67-58 lead.
