Indonesia to host 2021 Fiba Asia Cup
Indonesia chosen as host of the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup.
MANILA, Philippines—Indonesia will have a head start for 2023 after it was announced that the country will host the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup.
The Fiba Regional Office Asia confirmed the announcement through the governing body’s official website Friday.
Indonesia is one of the three countries, along with Japan and the Philippines, that will host the 2023 Fiba Basketball World Cup.
This will also be the second time that Indonesia will host the Fiba Asia Cup since 1993 when China beat DPR Korea in the final.
“We are very proud to host the FIBA Asia Cup in Jakarta next year, it is an excellent platform for Indonesia to display its basketball potential. It will also help us to prepare ourselves for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, both as an organizer and a national team,” said the Indonesian Basketball Federation, PERBASI, President Mr. Danny Kosasih.
The 2021 Fiba Asia Cup will run from August 16 to 28 and will feature the 16 best teams from Asia and Oceania.
“It will be an exciting couple of years for Indonesian basketball. Hosting the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 and co-hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 is a massive step forward towards developing basketball in the country,” said Fiba Asia President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani.
As the host country, Indonesia is automatically qualified as one of the 16 teams in the competition along with Lebanon and Bahrain, who have already secured their spots.
