MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas will retain the scholarships for all of its student-athletes despite the cancelation of UAAP Season 83.

As per the school’s official student publication The Varsitarian, the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics earlier said that scholarships granted in the second semester of academic year 2019-20 would be valid until the first term of AY 2020-21, which ended in December.

The student-athletes will still enjoy the benefits of their scholarships heading into the second semester of AY 2020-21 as IPEA Director Rev. Fr. Rodel Cansancio OP revealed.

“It’s true that UST will retain the scholarships of our student-athletes for the 2nd term of AY 2020-2021,” said Cansancio.

“In this time of pandemic and uncertainties, no student should be left behind.”

Rodrigo Sambuang, UST’s athletic moderator, said that 579 collegiate and 330 high school student athletes would benefit from the scholarship extension.

“All scholarships given last [term] will be offered the same this [term],” said Sambuang who also revealed that the school will do away with the Team B system.

Instead of having a Team B system, UST will institute a training pool for the reserves.

Those in the training pools of each team are also under the school’s scholarship program.
