Ravena, Eagles pip Tigers

Kiefer Ravena buried a difficult turnaround jumpshot with a second left as defending champion Ateneo escaped with a pulsating 65-63 victory over University of Santo Tomas last night in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Preseason Cup.

Struggling for most of the game, the sophomore guard fired a shot over Jeric Fortuna from 17 feet for the game-winner after the Tigers tied the game through Aljon Mariano at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

“Kiefer (Ravena) is a winner,” said Ateneo assistant coach Santi Arespacochaga of last year’s Rookie of the Year, who finished with six points.

Almost lost in the din of Ravena’s heroics was San Beda’s 73-63 trouncing of University of the Philippines that stretched the Lions’ unbeaten start to four games earlier.

National U, drawing superb efforts from Ray Parks, Jeoff Javillonar and Mark de Guzman, also stayed unscathed after drubbing Arellano U, 76-64, earlier.

Parks had 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists to help the Bulldogs improve to 3-0 in this tournament presented by Bostick Phils and Super Vulcaseal. With reports from Randolph B. Leongson, Contributor
