MANILA, Philippines — The national basketball federations of China (CBA), Chinese Taipei (CTBA) and Korea (KBA) paid costly price after they failed to participate in the second window of the Fiba Asia Cup 2021 qualifiers last November.
Fiba on Tuesday announced its Disciplinary Panel handed out a fine of CHF 160,000 (P8.5 million) for each of the three federations.
“A disciplinary fine of CHF 160,000, half of the sanction (CHF 80,000) being deferred to each national federation fully complying with its participation obligation in the next FIBA official competition,” Fiba said on its website.
Fiba also deducted two points from the three countries with a point awarded to the other competing nations.
“A 2 (two) points deduction in the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers, half of the sanction, 1 (one) point deduction, being deferred to each national federation fully complying with its participation obligation in the next FIBA official competition.”
Gilas Pilipinas, which is in Group A with Korea, for example, will get an additional one point in the standings while Korea’s four points have been reduced to just two because of the penalty.
The Philippines and Korea, which backed out of the second window due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, will meet twice in the third and final window of the qualifiers next month in Clark, Pampanga.
