Mangulabnan stuns Mondilla; Zaragosa ousts Jobim

MANILA—Rodel Mangulabnan, a 48-year-old engineer, yesterday provided the biggest shock in the 2011 Philippine Amateur championship by bundling out former national titlist Clyde Mondilla, 3 and 2, to reach the quarterfinals at Wack Wack’s East course.
Mangulabnan, easily outdriven by a hundred yards by the younger, stronger Mondilla, hit all 16 fairways and easily routed the Del Monte ace in the event presented by Pancake House and SOC Land.
Rupert Zaragosa III, the 13-year-old second seed, also claimed a formidable foe in Jobim Carlos via the same 3-and-2 score to advance opposite Wack Wack’s Tootsie de Jesus, the 26th seed who ripped Juan Ibazeta, 4 and 2.
Next up for Mangulabnan is another teener in Miggy Yee, the long-hitting Southwoods mainstay in the PAL Interclub who upset the eighth-seeded Zannie Boy Gialon, 1-up, in the event backed by Great Depot, Callaway and Odyssey Golf and organized by the National Golf Association of the Philippines.
Justin Quiban and Andres Saldana, the fourth and fifth seeds, also fell in contrasting fashions to John Kier Abdon and Cebuano Gio Gandiongco, respectively.
Abdon, who finished in the top five at the PH Am Open at Riviera, took a 2-and-1 win over Quiban, while Gandiongco, another teenager, walloped Saldana, 6 and 5.
They clash for Final Four seat today, with the other quarterfinal pairing pitting No. 3 King Stehmeier against Gus Mata.
Stehmeier took a 3-and-2 victory over John Coup Tambogon while Mata bested Matthew Manotoc, 2-up, by taking two of the last three holes.
In women’s play, Dottie Ardina, Jayvee Agojo and Chihiro Ikeda joined top-ranked Andie Unson in the quarterfinals.
The standouts of the ICTSI women’s stable simply proved too much for their respective foes, with Ardina dumping Chanelle Avaricio, 5 and 4; Agojo routing Samantha Martirez, 3 and 2; and Ikeda pounding Bianca Pagdanganan, 6 and 5.
Agojo and Ikeda collide for a semifinal seat, while Unson, the No. 1 seed who drew a first-round bye, clashes with Lovelyn Guioguio, a 2-up winner over Daniella Uy, for a place in the semifinals.
Ardina battles Sheryl Villacencio, a 3-and-1 winner over Katya dela Cruz, with Sarah Ababa, who beat Rainstar Roque, 4 and 3, and Sunshine Baraquiel, who bested  Marvi Monsalve, 3 and 2, duel in the fourth quarterfinal pairing.
