MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao on Saturday paid tribute to his longtime trainer Freddie Roach, whom he labeled as “the best trainer in the world.”

Roach responded by also showing his appreciation to his most prized fighter.
Thank you, Manny. You’ve been with me longer than any boxer I’ve ever worked with. I’m grateful for that. Thank you very much for the birthday post today. Thank you @MannyPacquiao https://t.co/J472WourCI

Pacquiao and Roach go a long way back.
Roach first handled Pacquiao in 2001 against South African champion Lehlo Ledwaba for the IBF super bantamweight title.
Despite being on short notice in his US debut, the underdog Pacquiao stopped Ledwaba in the sixth round with a performance that’s considered to be among the best of his celebrated career.
Twenty years later, the two remain a formidable force with Pacquiao still among the biggest draws in the sport.
