MANILA, Philippines—Veteran Billy Mamaril has left San Miguel after spending three years with the club, team manager Gee Abanilla bared Wednesday.

The 40-year-old spent much of his time on the bench during his years with the Beermen playing behind June Mar Fajardo, Arwind Santos, Moala Tautuaa, and Christian Standhardinger, when he was still with San Miguel.

Abanilla said the team could not give Mamaril another contract as the 6-foot-6 big man is set on pursuing a career in nursing.

“We can’t offer him another contract and he’s toward the end of his nursing course I think,” said Abanilla Wednesday.

Although Mamaril is not officially retired, he is an unrestricted free agent.

Nevertheless, he seems intent on going to the medical field as he began schooling even when he was still a valuable role player for the Beermen.

“I don’t want to speak for sure because maybe later on a team offers him a contract and he says yes,” said Abanilla.

Mamaril is a five-time champion winning his first two championships with Barangay Ginebra then later on with the Beermen.

The sixth overall pick of the 2003 Draft, Mamaril suited up for Purefoods, Shell, Coca-Cola, the Gin Kings, Air21, GlobalPort, and then San Miguel.
