VisMin Super Cup warns teams: Do the same, face expulsion and hefty fines
MANILA, Philippines—The Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup sent out a stern warning to its other teams who will try to emulate the shenanigans that Siquijor and Lapu-Lapu City did in their game on Wednesday.
In an announcement streamed through Facebook, Chief Operations Officer Rocky Chan said the league will not hesitate to expel any team and fine them for any actions that look to disrespect the sport.
“We will be fining teams who do the same action in the future. A fine of P1 million along with expulsion from the league,” said Chan Thursday.
Chan and the league’s officers already expelled the Siquijor Mystics after they featured in a bizarre game with the ARQ Builders-Lapu-Lapu City Heroes that saw both clubs go a combined 3-of-20 from the free throw line in the first quarter alone, among other instances.
Both the league and Games and Amusements Board investigated the matter resulting to the expulsion of the Mystics while the Heroes were slapped with suspensions and fines.
“Any deliberate actions that any of these teams or players are not tolerated in this league,” said Chan.
Though there are calls, especially from social media, to revoke the licenses of the players, GAB Chairman Baham Mitra said they will decide depending on the reports from their own personnel and from communication with the league.
“We commend the swift action of the VisMin management. We have been in close coordination with them and support their decision,” said Mitra. “revocation, while we respect the league rules, we will base our decision on the report from our own people on the ground and the move of VisMin but giving all parties concerned due process.”
Mitra added that his agency is keeping a close eye on the proceedings and would issue VisMin officials constant reminders.
“We assure basketball fans and the public that we are on the ground and making sure the integrity of professional sports is upheld at all times,” said Mitra.
