MANILA, Philippines — Former national team boxer Genebert Basadre, a gold medal winner in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, passed away on Sunday. He was 35.
The Association of Boxing Allainces in the Philippines (Abap) announced Basadre’s passing in a statement.
“The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (Abap) announces with deep sorrow the passing of former national boxer Genebert Basadre of Cagayan de Oro City,” said the sporting association in a statement Sunday.
Basadre, who also won a bronze medal in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, left the national team in 2010 to further his career with the Philippine Army.
Though retired from active competition, Basadre coached aspiring boxers in his home city of Cagayan de Oro.
Abap said they received information from Cagayan de Oro of Basadre’s incident with the amateur boxer collapsing at his home on Monday and was brought to Polymedic Plaza Hospital.
Basadre was revived on Tuesday but went into comatose Wednesday before passing away on Sunday at the said medical facility.
“He was so young, dedicated, soft-spoken, and well-liked,” said Abap secretary-general Ed Picson.
Apart from his medals in the regional and continental games, Basadre also won silver medals in the 2009 Kings Cup in Thailand and 2006 Tammer Cup in Finland.
Basadre also amassed bronze medals in World ranking competitions in Seville, Sociko, and Athens from 2002 to 2003.
