MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines is set to host the 2021 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Asian Senior Women’s Championship from August 27 to September 5 at Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.
This will be the third time that the country will be hosting the tournament after staging the competition in 1997 in Manila and in 2017 in Laguna.
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation is expecting 14 to 16 teams for the tournament.
“We are hosting, it’s 99%, the Asian Senior Women’s Championship in Clark,” said PNVF President Ramon “Tats” Suzara in a virtual press conference Wednesday.
The PNVF will make use of the same accommodation and playing venue as the PBA bubble and the Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers in Clark with Quest Hotel serving as the official residence and Angeles University Foundation as the playing facility.
Games will also be played at San Fernando, Pampanga Convention Center and Subic Gym.
“The Asian Championship will be held in Clark, in AUF. We had the go-signal from them yesterday,” said Suzara.
The PBA completed the 2020 Philippine Cup in December while the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will host the Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers this coming June.
China was the original host of the Asian Championships but backed out allowing the Philippines to take the hosting duties.
“AVC requested the Philippines to host the championships because China backed out. It’s about 14 to 16 teams,” said Suzara. “If FIBA Asia will be played in AUF, then up next will be volleyball.”
