MANILA, Philippines — With little fanfare, Carmela Tunay has called it a career.
The veteran spiker announced her retirement from volleyball in an interview on ONE Sports’ “The Game” on Tuesday.
“Actually, I’ve told a couple of friends that I won’t be playing. So I’m officially retired,” Tunay revealed.
Tunay said she opted not to make her retirement public because of the timing.
“I haven’t made like a public post or announcement about it because I didn’t want to draw attention because during the time I told my team that I won’t be pursuing volleyball, it was also the time Philippine volleyball talks were a hot topic. So I didn’t want to draw any attention,” said Tunay.
The 25-year-old Tunay also said she had already informed Peak Form about her decision. She was supposed to banner the squad as its captain in the Premier Volleyball League.
As she stepped away from the sport she loves, the former University of Santo Tomas star said she will be focusing more on her role as an agent and manager at Virtual Playground.
“Despite letting go of something I’m really passionate about, I’m gonna do something that I also super love,” said Tunay, who also had stints with Cignal, Petron and Motolite.
