Eala, Russian partner settle for second
Alex Eala and Oksana Selekhmeteva ended their run in the W25 Platja D’Aro in Spain on Saturday night after falling short to Lithuania’s Justina Mikulskyte and Romanian Oana Georgeta Simion, 6-3, 7-5, in the final.
Still, it was a gallant effort for Eala, who turns 16 on Sunday, and her 18-year-old Russian partner, who yanked the rug from under top seeds Vlada Koval and Sofya Lansere (6-3, 6-2, 12-10) in the quarterfinal.
Eala and Selekhmeteva defeated Dutch pair Isabelle Haverlag and Suzan Lamens, 6-3, 6-1, in Friday’s semifinals to book a final berth. —MARC ANTHONY REYES
