Brunei blanks Zambo squad, gains finals slot

BRUNEI team Kensei overpowered Zamboanga, 10-0, yesterday to claim the first finals berth in the men’s open division of the Cebuana Lhuillier Summer Grandslam National Softball Open at Clark Field in Pampanga.

It took only four innings for the Kensei team  to finish off Zamboanga as it wound up with a 7-1 card at the end of the elimination round to forge a showdown with the winner between Air Force and Army.

University of the East and Adamson Alumni team will dispute the women’s open crown.

But reaching the finals is already seen as a huge achievement for UE, which is seeing action in the tournament for the first time.

“We didn’t expect to be in the finals, but we want to make the most out of this opportunity,” said UE coach and Blu Girl Joy Lasquite, whose squad beat Adamson in the elimination round.

Marikina, which won all six games in the elimination round, takes on Laguna for the crown in the men’s club competition.

Rizal is already assured of the first finals berth in the women’s club division, where among its possible finals foes are Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of Sto. Tomas and NCR in the tournament organized by the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines. Cedelf P. Tupas
