Carlos Yulo wins bronze in Japan ahead of Tokyo Olympics

MANILA, Philippines — Carlos Yulo’s buildup for the Tokyo Olympics got a timely boost after he bagged the bronze medal in the 2021 All-Japan Apparatus Championships in Japan.

Yulo tallied 14.966 points to make the podium in the parallel bars event.

Hometown bets Yusuke Tanaka, who is the reigning Olympic champion, and Kaito Sugimoto finished tied for the gold medal with similar 15.400 points.

“What a blessing! Being able to play with the best is already an achievement for me,” Yulo wrote on his Instagram.

“It was a pretty good performance… but unfortunately, I didn’t reach my personal target score. I’ll definitely be using this experience to improve on my skills for future events.”

The 21-year-old world champion is among the 10 Filipinos who have already qualified for next month’s Games.
