MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines’ journey to the Olympics has come to an end after both the men’s and women’s teams got eliminated in the AVC Continental Cup Friday in Nakhon Pathom in Thailand.
Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons fell to New Zealand’s Alice Zeimann and Shauna Marie Polley in three sets, 19-21, 21-10, 15-12, in the Golden Match of the women’s semifinals.
The win set up New Zealand with a finals date with Olympic host Japan.
New Zealand beat the Philippines 2-1 overall in the three matches they played.
Jude Garcia and Anthony Arbasto failed in their test against Australia’s Maximilian Guehrer and Zachary Schubert, losing due to injury.
Garcia suffered cramps in the second set of the match forcing the Philippines to withdraw and give Australia a 2-0 sweep in the semifinals.
Australia will face Japan in the finals of the men’s division.
