More MVP awards? Why not, says Fajardo but main goal is more PBA titles

MANILA, Philippines—June Mar Fajardo already holds a resume worth of envy, winning eight titles and a league-most six MVPs.

And he wants more–not MVP awards, but championships.

“I’m not contented with what I have. My main goal is to win more championships but I know it’s easier said than done because other teams are also getting better,” said Fajardo in an interview with SportsIQ.

But if the San Miguel superstar has a chance to haul more MVP trophies, he’s not going to hesitate to go for it.

“To win another MVP trophy? Why not? My count was reset so I’m back to zero, so what I want is to win another six straight,” said Fajardo with a laugh. “Just kidding.”

While the 6-foot-10 center is still the reigning MVP despite the shortened 2020 season–which only had the Philippine Cup–Fajardo sees that lull in his career as a stoppage to his streak.

Stanley Pringle’s Best Player of the Conference award was the highest individual accolade of 2020 with the league not awarding an MVP. Fajardo sat out the season due to a fractured right tibia.

He won his first in 2015 when he led the Beermen to that year’s Philippine and Governors’ Cup titles and that began an era that practically saw him already holding the trophy all year round.

Fajardo’s six MVPs are the most in the league and his eight Best Player of the Conference awards is also a league record, blowing away the mark of five coronations that Jayson Castro and Danny Ildefonso hold.

During Fajardo’s stellar run, San Miguel also won five straight All-Filipino Cup titles in a first for the league.
