Student-athletes who will qualify for the National Academy of Sports (NAS) will be molded into competitors ready for international tournaments.

Created through Republic Act No. 11470, the NAS is now busy searching for these potential talents under the National Academy of Sports Annual Search for Competent Exceptional, Notable and Talented Student-Athlete Scholars (Nascent SAS).

According to NAS executive director Josephine Reyes, the academy will open its inaugural school year and provide full scholarship upon entry at Grade 7 or in junior high school up to Grade 12.

“The NAS will also provide them exposure to compete internationally and represent the country in qualified sports competitions,” Reyes said, adding that students-athletes will be given monthly stipend, free board and lodging, as well as school and training uniforms.

“With their athletic performance during their stay in the school system, they can also become exchange students so their talents will be honed even more,” added Reyes.

President Duterte approved the funding for the development of the facilities and amenities inside the NAS, which will have its campus at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac.

The government has set aside P729 million for building expenditures, including civil works, fittings, furnishings and equipment, as well as consultant services.

The deadline of submission of applications for the Nascent SAS is scheduled on July 31.

Besides seeking to improve their gift in sports, the newly established sports institution will also prioritize the academic performance of the young athletes since the NAS implements a holistic, enhanced sports curriculum. INQ
