Ateneo, Lyceum gun for last two 2 Shakey’s V-League semifinal slots

MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo and Lyceum try to complete the semifinal cast when they clash Thursday against separate rivals in the last playdate of the quarterfinals of the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 Second Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles, who have dropped their last three games, collide with the Far Eastern U Lady Tamaraws at 4 p.m. in a virtual knockout match.

The Lady Pirates face an already-eliminated National U at 2 p.m. still needing a victory to avoid a playoff for the last semifinal berth.

Leading the pack with identical 10-2 records are Adamson and San Sebastian, who have already clinched spots in the semifinals.

A victory by FEU and a Lyceum loss will forge a three-way tie. In this scenario, the team with the best quotient will advance outright while the two will clash in a playoff on Sunday.

The Lady Pirates are hoping to ride the crest of their surprisingly easy 25-20, 27-25, 25-21 triumph over the Lady Tamaraws.

The Lady Eagles have struggled lately despite the presence of Thai import Surasawadee Boonyuen.

Ateneo coach Clint Malazo is hoping to get more production from the likes of Fille Cainglet, Angelie Gervacio and Bea Pascual.

FEU hopes to counter with Michelle Carolino and Rachele Ann Daquis, who was held to just nine points in the loss to Lyceum.

Mary Jean Balse has proven to be the most efficient player in the Lady Pirates’ campaign. She struck 37 points against Ateneo two weeks ago and fired 24 in the victory over FEU.

The Lady Bulldogs, playing their first conference in the V-League, are bent on ending their campaign on a positive note.
