3 Filipino skaters vie for Beijing Winter Olympics slots

MANILA, Philippines—A trio of Philippine skaters are set to compete in Olympic qualifying events that could lead them to the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, the Philippine Skating Union said on Friday.

Figure skaters Sofia Frank and Edrian Celestino will compete in the Nebelhorn Trophy, the final qualifying event for the Winter Olympics, from September 22 until 25 in Oberstodf, Germany.

Speed skater Julian Macaraeg, meanwhile, will compete in World Cups 1-4 from October through November to get a slot in Beijing.

Frank and Macaraeg are coming off strong performances in their respective disciplines with the former taking gold in the figure skating competition of the Cup of Colorado.

Macaraeg, meanwhile, set a Philippine record in the 1,500 meter with a time of 2:28.290 in the Desert Classic Short Track in Utah.
