MANILA, Philippines—Ernie Gawilan failed to reach the podium and finished in sixth place in the men’s 400-meter freestyle in Tokyo Paralympic Games Sunday at Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
The Filipino bet clocked 4:56.24, 17.29 seconds behind bronze medal winner Evan Austin of the United States, who finished with a time of 4:38.95.
Israel’s Mark Malyar captured the gold medal with a world record performance of 4:31.06, beating the previous mark of 4:33.64 he set in London in September 2019.
Ukraine’s Andril Trusov took the silver with a time of 4:35.56.
Argentina’s Inaki Basiloff finished fourth after registering 4:38.99 while Italy’s Federico Bicelli clocked 4:43.67 for fifth place.
Singapore’s Toh Wei Soong placed seventh (5:06.39) while Taiwan’s Chen Liang-da finished eighth (5:10.65).
The Philippines is still searching for its first gold medal in the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
