MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines wrapped up its Tokyo Paralympic Games campaign on Friday without a medal.
Jerrold Mangliwan, the country’s final hope for a podium finish, clocked in at 20.08 seconds and finished last in the finals of the men’s 100-meter T52 Friday at the Olympic Stadium.
The Philippine delegation was reduced to three athletes after half of the qualified Filipino para bets tested positive for COVID-19 and were unable to compete.
Mangliwan, the country’s flag bearer in the opening ceremonies, competed in a total of three events—the men’s 100m T52, men’s 400m T52, and men’s 1,500m T52.
Earlier, swimmer Gary Bejino also bowed out of the medal running in his last race in the Para Games.
World and Olympic record holder Raymond Martin of the United States captured the gold medal in the men’s 100m T52, clocking in at 16.99 seconds while Japan’s Oya Yuki claimed the silver with a time of 17.18 seconds.
Mexico’s Leonardo de Jesus Perez Juarez took the bronze as he finished with a time of 17.44 seconds, which was also his personal best.
