MANILA, Philippines—Alex Eala’s chance for a singles trophy fizzled out after losing to Switzerland’s Sebastianna Scilipoti in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the US Open Junior Championships at Flushing Meadows Friday (Manila time).

The tournament’s second seed was gunning for a double in New York but she still has a chance at the doubles title as she and partner Hanne Vandewinkel continue their bid, taking on the American pairing of Madison Sieg and Elizabeth Coleman in the quarterfinal on Saturday.

The 16-year-old Eala struggled against Scilipoti, committing 46 unforced errors and nine double faults.

The unseeded Scilipoti will then take on Kristina Dmitruk of Belarus in the semifinals.

The Filipino teen’s best finish in a singles Grand Slam was a semifinal appearance in the 2020 French Open.
