Canlas, Resma seize top Juntaphil Metro net titles

SECOND seed Calvin Canlas came back strong after a narrow first-set loss to stun defending champion and top seed Dheo Talotayod, 6-7 (8-6), 6-0, 6-1, yesterday and capture the boys’ 18-under championship of the fifth First Gen Juntaphil Metro age group tennis championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

There was an even bigger upset in the girls’ 18 finals as fourth seed Roxanne Resma outclassed No. 1 Colleen Coyiuto, 6-2, 6-2.

Nine-year-old Michael Eala emerged the biggest winner when he snared his second title, beating top seed Jake Martin, 6-2, 6-0, in the boys’ 12-under final.

Eala, earlier bagged the 10-under unisex plum of the tournament presented by First Gen Corporation and sponsored by Smart.

Unseeded Khim Iglupas stunned third seed Frances Santiago, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, to claim the girls’ U-14 crown even as top seed Christian Lopez routed defending champion Chris Prulla, 6-0, 6-1 victory in the boys’ 14-U finals.
