MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines lost one of its sporting pillars after Mauricio “Moying” Martelino passed away Wednesday.

He was 86.

Martelino is the president of Sports Vision Management Group Incorporated, the body that organizes the Premier Volleyball League–an organization he formed in 2004 along with the late Jun Bernardino, Ricky Palou, and Rhea Navarro.

The pioneering sportsman also served as secretary-general of Philippine Bowling and held that same position with the Basketball Association of the Philippines, the predecessor of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

Martelino was also the 1978 Fiba World Championship executive director and secretary-general of the Asian Basketball Confederation in the 1990s.

Martelino’s work in basketball earned him an Order of Merit from Fiba in 1999 and is just one of six officials from Asia to have received such award.

While already working in the volleyball scene, Martelino continued his influence in basketball as he was a lead consultant for the SBP in the 2010s.

Martelino is survived by his son Ramon and daughters Letlet and Tina.
