MANILA— The election of Dr. Mikee Romero to the Philippine National Shooting Association board is expected to be ratified on Tuesday, paving the way for the Harbour Centre owner’s assumption of the PNSA presidency.
Eleven of 15 directors endorsed on Sunday Romero’s place in the board, which will then install him as the new president in place of long-time PNSA chief Art Macapagal, who stepped down over a month ago.
Only the members of the PNSA board, composed of directors from the association’s five groups—moving target, rifle, pistol, non-Olympic events and practical shooting—are eligible for the presidency.
“Dr. Romero, we believe, can help revitalize the sport we all love,” said Col. Danilo Gamboa of the rifle group.
Romero said he also recently met with Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco Jr. to discuss his plans for the PNSA.
“I’d like to thank Mr. Cojuangco for sharing his vast sports experience with me,” said Romero, who also co-owns the Philippine Patriots team in the Asean Basketball League.
Romero earned a nomination to the PNSA board following the resignation of Moving Targets Association director Adel Samson.
The MTA members, chaired by James Chua, later signed a petition supporting Romero’s PNSA candidacy.
Also backing Romero are Olympian Jethro Dionisio and veteran shooting champ Tac Padilla of the pistol group.
