MANILA, Philippines—Basketball legend Robert “Sonny” Jaworski became the first personality to be featured in Philippine Postal Corporation in “SALAMAT: Pagpupugay sa mga Alamat” commemorative series.
The PBA legend’s images are part of the Robert Jaworski: Living Legend series which will be featured in stamps and souvenir sheets.
This is part of the agency’s 75th anniversary celebration.
Jaworski, through his son Robert “Dodot” Jaworski Jr., thanked PhilPost for the honor and that he never imagined himself to be immortalized in important mailing accessories.
“To be included in the list of people who have been chosen by your esteemed corporation, to be considered legends of our time, let me express my profound gratitude for this great, great honor,” read Dodot during the ceremony at PhilPost’s head office in Manila Saturday.
Current Ginebra players LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar, Stanley Pringle, Joe DeVance, Scottie Thompson, and Mark Caguioa also attended the event along with Jaworski’s former teammate and fellow legend Mon Fernandez, and PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial.
“His legendary status and his popularity are the result of his discipline, dedication, and passion, on and off the court—and his ‘Never Say Die’ attitude. The Post Office recognizes Jaworski, Philippine Sports Hall of Fame inductee, for his contributions to the field of Philippine basketball,” wrote PhilPost on Facebook.
The limited edition stamps will be released on Sunday with the Jaworski collection just the start of the series that will feature other personalities.
“Never did I ever imagine that I would be put in the stamp of our beloved Republic,” read Dodot.
