The Pistons were without two starters. Killian Hayes missed his second straight game with a sprained thumb, while Isaiah Stewart served the first game of a two-game league suspension. Stewart had an altercation with the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James on Sunday.
Bey scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Pistons took a 25-20 lead. Grant had 12 points by halftime as the Pistons led 53-46.
With the score 55-52, the Pistons reeled off six consecutive points, including a Grant jumper. An 11-5 Detroit spurt later in the quarter made it 72-61. Jackson had five points and Trey Lyles added four during that stretch. A Diallo basket in the final second of the third gave the Pistons a 76-67 advantage entering the final quarter.
But after Detroit squandered a double-digit, second-half lead to the Lakers, history repeated itself Tuesday.
Herro drained two 3-pointers in an 18-second span to cut Detroit’s lead to three. A Caleb Martin steal and Herro foul-line jumper gave Miami an 80-79 edge. Another Herro 3-pointer and Dewayne Dedmon’s dunk off a Lowry feed gave the Heat an 85-79 lead with 7:22 remaining.
A 6-0 Miami spurt that was capped off by a Butler layup made it 94-82 with 3:43 left and prompted a Detroit timeout. The Pistons scored the next six points to cut the Heat’s lead in half. Adebayo scored the next three points to put the game away.
