Swimmer Alegarbes wins PH’s first gold in Asian Para Youth Games

MANILA, Philippines—Ariel Alegarbes and Russel Mitra secured the Philippines’ first gold and silver medals in the 2021 Asian Youth Para Games Friday in Manama, Bahrain.

Alegarbes won the gold in the 100-meter butterfly while Mitra settled for the silver in the 400m run.

The podium finishes are the Philippines’ first in para swimming and para athletics history and also the pioneer titles for Filipino athletes who are intellectually impaired.

The Philippines’ para athletes, however, aren’t done collecting hardware.

Alegarbes is already secured of a silver in the 100m breaststroke while Linard Sultan is in the same situation in para table tennis tournament.
