Serge Cortel, Benjie Truzada and Ricky Tan overcame the bad weather to clinch the overall championship of the inaugural Suntrust Cup held recently at the Sherwood Hills Golf Club course in Trece Martires, Cavite.
The Cortel-Truzada-Tan trio, with a team handicap of 13, bucked the mid-afternoon rains as they pooled a net 55 in the three-man scramble format.
Lawrence Celestino, Arnel Romero and Ramil Villanueva combined for a bogey-free, 11-under-par 61 to grab the overall gross title.
Top Division 1 (handicap 0-10) honors went to Rex Goquingco, Pong Manuel and Vince Lauron with a net 58, while Jeric Ang, Agui Cruz, and Dave Romero assembled a 56 to top Division 2 (11-above). Team Benlife—Jaime Fernandez, Junjun Plana and John Galang— prevailed in the sponsors and guests division.
The Suntrust Cup., the first major event of Sherwood Hills Golf Club Inc. under its president Harry Paltongan, lured 206 entries. The tournament was co-presented by Beneficial Life Insurance and Trinity Insurance Brokers.
Meanwhile, Claudine Garcia scored her second career hole-in-one on the par 3 No. 11.
