MANILA, Philippines—Filipino tennis pro Treat Huey and his partner Christopher Rungkat advanced to the second round of the men’s doubles tournament of 2022 Australian Open  Wednesday at Melbourne Park.

Huey and Rungkat, who hails from Indonesia, gutted out a three-set win over India’s Rohan Bopanna and France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-2, in the tournament opener.

The Southeast Asian partners had to shake off the first two sets before finding their rhythm in the third where they completely dominated Bopanna and Roger-Vasselin.

Taking a 4-1 lead in the set, Huey then pushed it to 5-1 with a booming ace.

Bopana and Roger-Vasselin managed to salvage one last game, 5-2, but Huey and Rungkat held on to take the final set off of a backhand winner.

Huey and Rungkat, who have eight Southeast Asian Games gold medalists between them, are now waiting for their second round opponents.

Australia’s Li Tu and Dane Sweeny will take on Andrey Golubev and Croatia’s Franko Skugor in their first round draw with the winner taking on Huey and Rungkat.
