V.League: Saitama Ageo Medics cancel next four games due to COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines—The Saitama Ageo Medics’ next four games in the V.League have been canceled due to COVID-19 infections within the team.

In a statement on Monday, Saitama–the team of Filipino volleyball star Jaja Santiago–said five team members have turned in positive COVID-19 results.

“From the morning of January 21, multiple people complained of fever and sore throat, and when they visited a medical institution and performed a PCR test, 4 people received a positive test. In addition to the one announced on January 20, the number of positives has increased to five,” the club said.

The rest of the team has also undergone testing and is waiting for the results.

“Saitama Ageo Medics has been working on measures to prevent the spread of new coronavirus infections, but in the future, all players, staff, and related parties will take even more thorough measures.”

Saitama was supposed to play back-to-back games against Himeji starting on Saturday before figuring in another two-game series against the Toray Arrows on February 5 and 6.

Santiago and the Ageo Medics are currently sixth in the standings with a 10-6 record after winning their last two games against Kurobe.
