Gilas Pilipinas to play familiar foes in Fiba Asia Cup

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines will be facing familiar foes in the group stage of the 2022 Fiba Asia Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Gilas Pilipinas was drawn into Group D along with New Zealand, Lebanon, and India for the continental tournament that will be played from July 12 to 24 at Istora Gelora Bung Karno.

New Zealand is the highest-rated team in the group at No. 27 in the world while the Philippines is six rungs down at no. 33.

Lebanon ranks No. 55 in the world while India is at No. 80.

Interestingly, the Philippines will be facing off against New Zealand and India in the February window of the 2023 Fiba Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Australia leads Group A along with host Indonesia, Jordan and Saudi Arabia while China, South Korea, Taiwan and Bahrain are in Group B.

Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan and Syria, meanwhile, make up Group C.
