MANILA, Philippines—Phoenix needed an injection of energy to get more stability in its playoff hunt and new import Du’vaughn Maxwell delivered that in bunches.

Maxwell was instrumental in the Fuel Masters’ streak-breaking 104-99 win over Alaska to keep them in the race for a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2021-22 PBA Governors’ Cup.

Phoenix head coach Topex Robinson said Maxwell is just the right person for the job going into a seamless transition to replace the underwhelming Dominique Sutton.

“Du’vaughn is a really perfect fit for us,” said Robinson Thursday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Fuel Masters went 1-3 with Sutton, with three of those losses coming in successive fashion, and had to bring in Maxwell in an attempt to reverse their fortunes.

Maxwell, in just his first game, knew what he had to do as he finished with 21 points, 21 rebounds, and two blocks.

The 6-foot-6 forward also converted on the crucial layup that put the Fuel Masters up 103-99 as he connected on a pick-and-roll play with Matthew Wright.

“What he brought to us is solid defense in the paint, making smart moves defensively, making his shots, and I think the energy he brings to the team is very important,” said Robinson whose team improved to 5-5 to get to the seventh seed in the ladder.

“In an import conference you want an import the locals can trust.”
