Young shuttlers, PH bowlers dominate nat’l games

DUMAGUETE CITY—A band of eager young shuttlers yesterday launched a daring raid in POC-PSC National Games badminton competitions.

Golden Shuttlecock Foundation’s Antonino Benjamin Gadi and Ma. Bianca Ysabel Carlos led the charge by taking the men’s and women’s singles crowns at the Hypermart yesterday which could likely trigger a massive change in the national team composition.

Gadi, 22 years old from Ateneo, deflated Kevin Cudiamat of PH team, 21-7, 21-12, while Carlos drubbed Janelle Gloriane De Vera of Laguna-Whackers, 22-20, 17-21, 21-10 in the premier classes of the competition participated in by almost 300 shuttlers, 50 of them getting invites to the national tryouts later this month.

“I really trained hard for this competition because this is the highest national competitions,” said Gadi, who, after the final match, stood as coach for GSF age-group shuttlers.

Nine lifters broke 30 national records in weightlifting that concluded at the Lamberto Macias Coliseum lobby.

Zamboanga City’s Jeffrey Garcia carried 114 kilograms in snatch, 153 kg in clean and jerk and 267 kg total to sweep the gold medals in 62-kg Open, secondary and junior divisions. His outputs in all three events in each division were all considered new Philippine records.

Frederick Ong, a member of the Philippine National bowling pool, won the gold medal in the men’s Masters bowling event at the Sta. Lucia East Bowling Center in Cainta, Rizal.

Ong scored 225 in the final match to beat Carlo Mansilungan, another PH pool member, who posted a 201.

Rachelle Leon, a member of the PH pool, won the gold in the ladies’ division as she held steady against Janine Kuwahara of TBAM.

The Sta. Lucia East Tenpin Bowling Association (Sletba) won the gold in the men’s team event. Composed of Jason Ko, Mon Leon, Arnel Camota, Lito Santarinala, and Dennis Ramirez, the team posted a total of 11,006 in the final six-game series.
