MANILA, Philippines—University of the Philippines recovered from a mid-second half dip to overcome National University, 84-76, Tuesday and stretch its winning streak to seven in the UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena.

Carl Tamayo scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Fighting Maroons posted their longest winning run in recent years.

“We started strong in the first quarter and I think all of our games we’re able to have a solid start,” Fighting Maroons head coach Goldwin Monteverde said. “But in the third quarter, we turned the ball over too many times so we need to see what errors to improve on. Definitely, we’re going to learn more coming from this win.”

From a tight 68-66 lead, Carl Tamayo and Ricci Rivero sparked a 10-point swing to take the Fighting Maroons out of danger by mid fourth quarter en route to a repeat win over the Bulldogs for a 7-1 record. NU fell to 4-4.
