MANILA, Philippines—University of the Philippines recovered from a mid-second half dip to overcome National University, 84-76, Tuesday and stretch its winning streak to seven in the UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena.
Carl Tamayo scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Fighting Maroons posted their longest winning run in recent years.
From a tight 68-66 lead, Carl Tamayo and Ricci Rivero sparked a 10-point swing to take the Fighting Maroons out of danger by mid fourth quarter en route to a repeat win over the Bulldogs for a 7-1 record. NU fell to 4-4.
NU was playing catch-up all morning, falling behind by 15 points in the second quarter, 38-23.
But the Bulldogs tried to come back and tied the match on a three-pointer by Reyland Torres, 58-all with a minute left in the third period.
