MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas fought through poor shooting and rash of turnovers in the early going to down University of the East, 72-61, and stop a three-game losing spell Tuesday in the UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena.

Sherwin Concepcion and Dave Ando starred as the Tigers slow-burned their way to their third victory in six matches making an auspicious start in the second round.

Concepcion knocked in five three-pointers to finish with 17 points, while the 6-foot-7 Ando wound up with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers, who only pulled away from the Warriors’ tight hold late in the third quarter.

UST struggled offensively, making only 24 percent from the field to fall by 10 points, 21-11, at the end of the first quarter.
