MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes is rallying behind presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo in the May 9 elections.
In a video he posted on Instagram, Reyes said “puso”—the men’s basketball team’s battle cry—should also be the next president’s call to arms.
“Sa bawat game lagi naming sinisigaw, ‘Laban Pilipinas. Puso!’ At ang pusong ito’y hindi lang pang basketball, dapat taglay din ito ng ating susunod na Pangulo,” said Reyes.
“Puso ay ang pagmamahal sa bayan na makikita sa mga gawaing nakakaangat ng buhay ng ating mga kababayan.”
(For every game, we always shout ‘Fight, Philippines! Heart!’ and having heart is not just for basketball, it should also be a quality of our next president. Heart is loving your country through deeds the uplift the lives of our countrymen.)
Reyes has been vocal about rooting for Robredo in the presidential race. The Tropang Giga coach in the PBA even attended Robredo’s rally in Pasig last month.
“Puso ay ang tapang (Heart is courage) — the courage to never give up no matter the odds. Maski siraan ka na, maski pinipilit ka nilang pinapabagsak (despite the detractors), just never, ever give up,” Reyes said in the video. “Mapabagyo, lindol, sakuna, pandemic, ano pa man ‘yan, puso ay nakikita sa mabilisang pagtugon sa pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan, anuman ang kailangan (May it be through typhoons, earthquakes, emergencies, pandemic, no matter what it is, heart is seen through immediate response to the needs of fellowmen, whatever the needs may be).”
“Hindi pa tapos ang laban. Last two minutes na at wala na tayong timeout. Kaya ngayon, kailangan natin ng teamwork. Magtulungan tayo upang maipagmalaki sa buong mundo na tayo ay Pilipino. Ako si Chot Reyes, buong pusong lumalaban at tumataya para kay Leni Robredo,” he added.
