MANILA, Philippines–University of Santo Tomas reclaimed the UAAP men’s chess title after 10 years while National U bagged its first-ever women’s chess crown at the end of the Season 84 chess tournaments Wednesday.

The Tiger Woodpushers clinched their eighth championship with 28 points, winning in the last round over De La Salle University, 2.5-1.5.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs, who virtually bagged the title before the day’s matches, lost to De La Salle, 1.5-2.5, on the final day to finish the tournament with 26.5 points. La Salle ended in second with 21 points, while Adamson broke the deadlock with Ateneo with the 2-2 draw to place third.

“I can say our players have really high caliber,” UST coach Ronald Dableo said. “It’s a big factor that most of our players are veterans since high school. They’ve won MVPs and gold medals.”

In the men’s competition, University of the Philippines ended in second with 26 points while Far Eastern completed the podium with 25 points.

FEU senior Jeth Romy Morado edged out UP rookie Jan Daryl Batula in the tiebreaker armageddon match to bag the men’s Most Valuable Player award and the Board 1 gold. Batula, though, received the Rookie of the Year honors.

On the women’s side, NU rookie WFM Allanney Doroy went undefeated in all her six matches to bag the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards to go with her Board 2 gold.

“We’ve very happy but it was overwhelming since we were on a break for two years. We were really thirsty for a trophy,” said Doroy.
