MANILA, Philippines —Filipino billiards ace Carlo Biado was dethroned in the men’s 9-ball pool stage of the 2022 World Games on Sunday.
Biado fell to Joshua Filler of Germany, 8-11, in the semifinals on Sunday (Manila time) at Sheraton Ballroom Hotel in Birmingham, Alabama.
The 38-year-old cue artist fought back from a 6-10 deficit, winning two straight rounds to move within two. But Filler put on the finishing touches to beat the defending champion and reach the finals.
“Sadly I failed to go home with a medal on this event but I did try my very best to defend my title. I played really well. I do jogging and practice every day and felt that I will get this again but in the last two games the luck is not on my side,” said Biado in a Facebook post.
“I’m still blessed I’m [given] a chance represent the Philippines 
Biado, the reigning US Open champion, bowed to Singaporean Aloysius Yapp, 8-11, in the bronze medal match.
Filler won the gold after beating Bosnian Sanjin Pehlivanovic, 11-8, in the championship match.
Rubilen Amit, meanwhile, failed to reach the women’s 9-ball pool semifinals after losing to German Veronika Ivanovskaia, 8-9.
