MANILA, Philippines—College of St. Benilde stifled University of the East, 72-63, in Group A of the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Sunday at San Juan Arena.
Blazers head coach Charles Tiu lauded his wards’ efforts especially on the defensive end where they held the Red Warriors to measly 30 percent shooting from the field.
“I asked them to play smarter and so we held them to 30 percent shooting overall which I think was pretty good, so our defense held up and we were able to make the right adjustments,” Tiu said.
Miguel Corteza drained a triple that put the game out of reach, 72-59, inside the final two minutes.
Corteza finished with 15 points while Will Gozum had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Blazers, who upped their mark to 3-2.
Harvey Pagsanjan scored a game-high 24 points for the Red Warriors, who fell to 2-4.
