MANILA, Philippines—A determined Arellano University denied Perpetual Help a quarterfinals berth, 84-66, in Group A of the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Saturday.
After losing six of their seven games, Chiefs head coach Cholo Martin was pleased to pick up a significant victory heading into the upcoming NCAA Season 98.
“I’m happy that we played well. We have learned from many things. This is huge for us because we have no tune-up games, these are our only games,” Martin said.
The Chiefs foiled the Altas’ quarterfinals bid and dealt them their third loss in four games. Both teams finished with a 2-6 win-loss record.
Up 65-58, in the third quarter, the Chiefs uncorked a pivotal 11-0 run to them ahead for good, 76-58.
Arellano’s lead ballooned to as many as 21 late, 84-63.
Wilmar Oftana finished the game with 20 points for the Chiefs while Cade Flores notched a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Altas were spearheaded by Rey Barcuma’s 15 points and seven boards. Jasper Cuevas also contributed 13 and five assists in the loss.
