MANILA—After making great strides in the men’s doubles of the ATP Tour, Fil-Am Treat Huey just might drop out of the Davis Cup team next month.
The 25-year-old partner of Cecil Mamiit in several Davis Cup battles is reportedly torn between competing in the Asia/Oceania relegation playoff against New Zealand and the Campbell’s Hall of Fame event in the US.
The Davis Cup tie in Taranaki, New Zealand, is set on July 8 to 10, while the Hall of Fame event where he can earn vital ATP points is scheduled in Newport, Rhode Island, starting on July 4.
At No. 92 in the world in doubles, Huey stands a bigger chance of winning in the $500,000 ATP Tour event especially because the big guns are likely to be in their respective Davis Cup campaigns.
He is in the same quandary as Pakistan’s top netter Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, who skipped the Davis Cup tie against the Philippines two years ago to take part in the same event.
However, the Philippine Tennis Association has named Mamiit, Huey, fellow Fil-Am Ruben Gonzales and junior stalwart Jeson Patrombon for the New Zealand tie.
They will also see action in the November Southeast Asian Games, according to Philta secretary general and SEAG deputy chief of mission Romeo Magat.
The Philippines holds a 3-1 Davis Cup record over New Zealand.
