NCAA South on; Faith five scores

HOST FIRST ASIA Institute of Technology and Humanities (Faith) needed an extra period to nip surprisingly tough newcomer University of Batangas, 77-75, at the start of the 12th NCAA South men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Indoor Sports Arena and Activity Center on the Faith campus in Tanauan City, Batangas.   Reygie Debulcos knocked in the game-winning triple with 23.4 seconds for the Bravehearts, who rose from nine points down, 57-66, in regulation against the Brahman.   Arnelito Amatorio’s undergoal stab with 13.6 seconds remaining forged overtime at 68-all.   In juniors action, Gian Angelo Atienza drilled 26 points as Faith completed a first-day sweep of the University of Batangas in a 96-53 rout.   A grand opening rites kicked off the season with Faith, which was also celebrating its 10th year anniversary, highlighting the event with a “human LCD” demonstration choreographed by the Aligma Dance Troupe Lipa City that featured over 300 performers.   Sports commissioner Akiko Thomson, along with Faith president Saturnino Belen and vice president and league chair Gay Marie Francisco, declared the season open.   Rounding out the 10-team field are Don Bosco-Mandaluyong, San Beda Alabang, Philippine Christian University-Dasmariñas, Letran Calamba, Lyceum Batangas, San Pablo Colleges, University of Perpetual Help-Laguna and De La Salle Lipa.
