Running a smart race on Sunday, Cam From Behind and the veteran Kelvin Abobo made their move at the right time to rule the P2 million Philippine Racing Commission (Philracom) Sampaguita Stakes by nipping top favorite Mommy Caring at Metro Manila Turf Club in Malvar, Batangas.
The five-year-old roan by Havana out of Miss Lemon Drop caught Mommy Caring in the final strides of the 2,000-meter contest to win despite racing wide in the final bend for home.
Killer pace
Clocking a respectable two minutes and 7.2 seconds over a fairly hard track, Cam From Behind won the P1.2 million top prize, with Mommy Caring settling for the second place purse worth P450,000.
Abobo refused to fall into a killer pace early when Mommy Caring and La Liga Filipina battled it out, as the ace jockey settled watching the action before asking Cam From Behind for the juice after rounding the far turn.
La Liga Filipina finished third. while the seasoned Isla Puting Bato, who also looked to be in the running for a win, was fourth.
Meanwhile, the Philracom is inviting everyone to attend the first Philippine Horseracing and Breeding Expo on Oct. 14-16 at San Lazaro Business and Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite. INQ
